As of January 16, access to e-filing is available for your federal and state taxes.
As far as the Feds, if you have an adjusted gross income of $56,000 or less, you can go to http://www.irs.gov/app/freeFile/jsp/index.jsp?ck to prepare and e-file your taxes for free.
If you don't qualify for free services, you can go to http://www.irs.gov/efile/lists/0,,id=101223,00.html for a listing of tax preparation and e-file services (prices vary) that apparently the IRS loves.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Some of these companies will offer to file your state taxes for you for an additional fee (like $34.95!) DO NOT PAY IT!
Instead, go to the IL Dept. of Revenue to calculate and e-file FOR FREE at https://www.revenue.state.il.us/app/ifile/
If you don't live in IL, google your state's Dept. of Revenue to find out if similar services are offered.
It took about 2 1/2 hours to do our federal return today. Probably wouldn't have taken quite as long, but Mike "helped" me... ;~}
The state's only took about 10 minutes. And just in case he's reading: Mr. Blagojevich, I will not be mailing my check until April 15th.
